Barge-in is the ability for a caller to interrupt a voice system while it is speaking. The system must detect the new speech, stop or lower its own audio, preserve what was heard, and decide how to respond. Reliable barge-in makes correction possible without forcing callers through a full message.
How does barge-in work?
Input audio remains active during playback. When voice activity detection finds caller speech, the system cancels or lowers output and passes the new turn onward. The interruption must also cancel queued audio, or old words may continue after the agent has changed direction. Full-duplex voice AI supports this simultaneous listening and speaking.
What should teams test?
Test corrections, short acknowledgements, coughs, television speech, echo, and multiple speakers. A fast false interruption is still a failure, so measure both detection delay and unwanted triggers. Connect the event to turn detection and preserve it in the call trace. A production voice agent should resume with the caller’s updated intent, not restart the previous answer.
Frequently asked questions
Does every sound trigger barge-in?
It should not. The system needs to distinguish meaningful caller speech from coughs, background voices, and its own audio.
What should happen after barge-in?
Playback should stop or duck quickly, the interruption should be transcribed, and the conversation should continue from the corrected intent.
