C2PA

ProductionSafety and governancePublished By Simon Budziak

C2PA is an open technical standard for attaching cryptographically signed provenance information to digital media. Its Content Credentials can record who created or edited an asset, which tools were involved, and whether the manifest remains intact, without claiming that the content itself is true or harmless.

C2PA technical specification provides the primary reference used for this definition and its production boundaries.

How does c2pa work in production?

A creator or tool signs a manifest and binds it to an asset. Later edits can add new assertions, forming a chain that viewers verify. Content provenance is the broader goal. C2PA authenticates recorded history, not the truth of the scene.

When does c2pa matter?

Use C2PA for images, audio, and video produced by multimodal LLMs or conventional tools. Combine it with AI transparency and understand how AI watermarking differs. Metadata can be removed, so missing credentials are not proof of manipulation.

Frequently asked questions

What is c2pa used for?

Use C2PA for images, audio, and video produced by multimodal LLMs or conventional tools. Combine it with AI transparency and understand how AI watermarking differs.

Is C2PA the same as an AI watermark?

No. C2PA signs provenance metadata and edit history; a watermark embeds a detectable signal in the content.
